SOLUTIONS THAT DEFY MY UNDERSTANDING!
Monday Morning Message, March 7, 2011
Word out of Rutgers University this past week is that a new dormitory arrangement has been devised in response to the tragic death of one of their students. The new arrangement is that the dormitory options for students will include being able to have men and women together in the same dorm and in fact men and women roommates are also an option. The term is “gender neutral” and may prompt a whole new round of possible choices for future roomies. This policy was deemed necessary as a corrective action from the suicidal death of Tyler Clementi.
Rutgers is not the first nor is it the only school to be offering such arrangements and there are no statistics published on how many have opted for this. Even though parents are expected to pay the tuition bills, they will have no say according to university officials about their children’s roommates. Officials add that they will not “discriminate” against heterosexual couples who also request to be roommates as once again; this is part of the “gender neutral” policy.
I know you think each week my age and old foggyism must be showing thru in the MMM’s but this used to be such an easy policy decision. From the lyrics in the old country and western song “what part of NO do you not understand?” What part of the real world is “gender neutral”? There is no question about the special needs of many people who suffer from sexual sins but to re-define the world around each of us thus legitimizing all behavior as acceptable violates God’s laws. Giving proper attention to those who need help is very important, normalizing their behavior is prolonging the problem by blaming everyone else who must be at fault for being gender conscious. Do you think Christian students who are being hazed for their faith would qualify for special dorm rooms for protection?
In the world I visualize, the wrath of the administration should be placed on the bullies and those responsible for reprehensible actions. To define the world in a way to ease all of our discomforts is to distort truth and to deny God’s design for each of us as unique and beautiful creations in his image. As each of us is challenged in our place in life to deny God’s role in our life, I trust that you will find the courage to not just stand for truth but be bold in declaring that you are not ashamed of the Gospel for it is the power unto salvation to all who will accept it and believe it!
I John 4:7-8 (RSV) “Beloved, let us love one another; for love is of God, and he who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God; for God is love.”
